Vitsoe 606,

A True Design

Master-Piece

Vitsoe 606 Dieter Rams

If there is one thing that I would love to own at some point in my life, it is the Vitsœ 606 shelving system. This absolute masterpiece by Dieter Rams has fascinated me for over 15 years. Every time I look at it or see it come by, it still attracts me. Which means it’s either a timeless piece, or I’ve become so biased by this point that I cannot see through it anymore. Nevertheless, it is a great piece of furniture.

What I do love about it is that it’s modular. So whatever happens, it can grow, shrink, form, and transform to fit the situation you are in. For me, that’s a whole other level of design. Something that is created with so much care and really built to last. Where function and form live in harmony, and with that, it also adapts to you instead of you needing to adapt to it.

And that’s not all. By making it modular, you can also add a piece of yourself to it. They created something that is 80% finished, the last 20% is up to you. They will help you with it, but still, it is up to you, your space, the purpose, and the function you will give to it. This determines the final shape and look of your unique piece.

For me, this is exactly what design is about, and I am confident that in 15 years I will still think the same about it and hopefully have one in my life as well.
